The 16th Announcement Regarding the Open Letter on Liu Juhua’s Plagiarism Case
September 15, 2013
of the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (GSCASS) is: study diligently, think prudently, discern distinctly, and act courageously
. It is said that the motto “not only is the important navigation mark for the future construction and long-term development of the Graduate School,” it is also “the important guidance for making new and greater contribution to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the great cause of China's modernization.” However, based on what the GSCASS has done, or more exactly, what the School hasn’t done, about the Liu Juhua scandal, it is crystal clear that the motto is nothing but a camouflage used for hiding their dirty deeds.
First of all, China’s laws and government regulations state explicitly how to handle academic degree fraud. However, it seems that the GSCASS, the self-proclaimed “the training base of the reserve talents for the stronghold of Marxism, the highest academic hall of philosophy and social sciences in China, and the think tank of the CCP Central Committee and the State Council of China,
” has been intentionally ignoring these laws and regulations. Obviously, they do not study at all, let alone diligently.
Secondly, the academic communities around the world regard plagiarism as their worst enemy. However, two and a half years have passed since the outbreak of Liu Juhua plagiarism scandal, and eighteen months have passed since our open letter
was made public and sent to them directly, yet we are still waiting for “the stronghold of Marxism” to make an official comment or statement on the notorious case. It seems that even a fool should be able to think the matter over thoroughly during such a long time. It is obvious that the GSCASS has not been thinking prudently, they don’t think at all.
Thirdly, there are mountains of irrefutable evidence showing that Liu Juhua indeed committed plagiarism, so it is extremely easy for the GSCASS to show the world their discernment on the case. And yet, “the highest academic hall of philosophy and social sciences in China” is still unable to do so. The only explanation to this is that the GSCASS does not want to discern, let alone discern distinctly.
Lastly, it appears that everyone understands that the key issue on the Liu Juhua scandal is to take action according to the laws of the land and academic norms adopted by the civilized world. However, “the think tank of the CCP Central Committee and the State Council of China” has been refusing to take any actions. Why? Obviously because they are disallowed by their boss to act, therefore, they could not act, let alone act courageously.
We believe that it might be a private matter if one chooses to prostitute; however, it is a public matter if one prostitutes while moaning moralism, because by doing so, he/she sullies, disgraces, and degrades our moral standard, which, of course, is the heritage of human civilization. Therefore, we strongly urge the GSCASS to make a choice between upholding a moral banner and selling your own body and soul.
